About This Project

Project ASCENT was a CDC-funded initiative subcontracted by CLT Business Solutions to gather insights on lung cancer screening from Latino/Hispanic populations in South and Central Florida. The project aimed to address the disproportionate impact of lung cancer on ethnic subgroups and improve public health outcomes through increased awareness and early detection.

Customer Need

The primary need was to understand the perceptions and awareness of lung cancer screening within Hispanic communities, particularly those aged 50-80 with a history of smoking. This understanding would help in developing targeted strategies to increase screening rates and early detection, ultimately improving health outcomes in these populations.

Specific Goals

  • Gather insights from Latino/Hispanic populations in South and Central Florida on lung cancer screening.
  • Disseminate informational materials about lung cancer.
  • Drive awareness for Baptist cancer sites throughout Florida.

Action Plan

Recruitment and Training: Bilingual brand ambassadors with street team experience were recruited and trained.
Survey Distribution: Surveys were conducted in various locations in Kissimmee and Orlando, targeting Hispanic individuals aged 50-80 with a history of smoking.
Incentives: Participants were provided with gift cards as incentives for completing the surveys.
Educational Materials: Informational brochures about lung cancer were distributed to increase awareness.
Phased Implementation:
  • March-April 2024: Approved surveys: 99
  • April 22 – May 6, 2024: Total surveyed: 48
  • May 15 – June 7, 2024: Total surveyed: 87

Results

  • Total Approved Surveys: 185
  • Total Not Approved Surveys: 69
  • Overall Survey Completion Rate: 72.8%
  • Key Findings:
    • The project successfully surveyed 185 Hispanic individuals aged 50-80 with a history of smoking.
    • A high approval rate of 72.8% indicated effective targeting and engagement.
    • The multi-phase approach allowed for continuous data collection and strategy refinement.
    • Insights were gathered from diverse Hispanic communities in Kissimmee and Orlando.
Conclusion:
Project ASCENT has touched the lives of Hispanic communities in South and Central Florida by successfully uncovering vital insights into their perceptions of lung cancer screening. Through deep community engagement and thoughtful data collection, the project has set a compassionate example for future public health efforts aimed at specific ethnic groups. The knowledge gained from this initiative holds the promise of improving lung cancer prevention and early detection, not just for Hispanic communities in Florida, but for many others in the future.
