What does new users mean in google analytics?

A “new user” is a visitor who has never been to your site before and is initiating their first session on your site.
Or in other words, the number of users who interacted with your site for the first time.

Google Analytics users

Visitors to your website fall into two categories: those who have never been there before, and those who have. This is usually the difference between new and returning visitors in Google Analytics, and it’s a useful data point to understand who is visiting your website.
However, there is one thing about Google Analytics (or GA for short): the data from GA is not 100% dependable and will not tell you everything you need to know.

What are users in Google Analytics?

Users are visitors who have initiated one session with your website or app during a given time frame. When you log in to your GA account, the first indicator you see on the Home page is the number of users, which fluctuates depending on the timeframe you select (today, yesterday, last 7 days, etc.)

What is the difference between new and returning users?

According to Google’s tracking snippet, new users are people who have never visited your website; returning users have already visited your site.
When someone visits your website, Google’s tracking snippet searches their device for a tracking cookie:
  • If the cookie is missing, Google adds one and deems the user to be “new.”
  • If the cookie is present, Google deems the user to be “returning” and initiates a new session.
Important note: We used italics in the statement “have never been to your website, according to Google’s tracking snippet,” since there are lots of occasions where visitors have been to your site before but Google’s tracking snippet doesn’t detect it and labels them as ‘new’ nevertheless.

How users are identified for user metrics

The Users and Active Users stats reflect how many people visited your website or app.
A unique identity associated with each user is delivered with each hit in order for Google Analytics to determine which traffic belongs to which user. This identifier can be a single, first-party cookie called _ga that stores a Google Analytics client ID, or it can be used in conjunction with the client ID to more properly identify users across all devices they use to visit your site or app. Read about cookies and user identification in our developer guide for additional information on identifiers.
Google Analytics began revising the computation for the Users and Active Users metrics in early 2017 to more accurately count users with a low error rate (usually less than 2%). The metrics can be found in your normal reports. With the exception of Unsampled Reports and BigQuery Export, which will continue to utilize the prior calculation approach, you may notice a tiny change in user count from the old calculation method (described below). The prior method is also used in the New Users computation.
This new calculation is applied to user data back through September 2016. If the date range for your report includes data from prior to September 2016, then sampling occurs. If you want unsampled reports that include data prior to 2016, then use the directions below to turn off the new calculation method.
As of August 2017, the new calculation is applied to data in Custom Tables.
